B. BRIEF SUMMARY OF REPRESENTATIVE PERTINENT RESEARCH
INVOLVEMENTS
|
(.) “Cultivarietal Comparison of Patchouli in Relation to Essential Oil Production and Quality”. Published, Flavor and Fragrance Journal, 1990.
This paper pertains to an important source of essential oil for the perfumery industry-Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth.). Three cultivars were studied and compared in terms of morphological characteristics, biomass yield, oil yield, and the quality of the oil produced. One cultivars (from Taiwan) came out with quality close to that of the standard oil. The two other cultivars (from Japan and Philippines) are of interest for breeding programs and as sources of different types of Patchouli essential oils.
(.) “In Vitro Growth and development of Callus Derived from Rachilla of Young Inflorescences and Zygotic Embryos of Coconut Palm ( Cocos Nucifera L.)” Presented, First National Symposium on Plant Tissue Culture in Philippine Agriculture and Forestry, Los Banos, Laguna, 1988.
This paper describes the tissue results using coconut rachilla and embryo tissue. Both explants produced good calluses that would later show root – and – shoot – like projections with some surface greening when exposed to light. The rachilla tissues gave, in addition to calluses, some out- growths a few of which developed into plantlets with true leaflets and adventitious roots. Pertinent culturing conditions are indicated in the paper.
(.) Analytical Methods Development for the quality Control
This is a series of activities to improve existing analytical methods develop new ones in order to upgrade quality control procedures in coco- chemical processing. An example is the development of a simplified method for the determination of Therm-S 300 (a heating medium consisting of biphenyl ether) contamination in coconut fatty alcohols. This method employs high performance liquid chromatography with UV detection. A rapid method owing to minimal preparation, it contributes greatly to prevent big production losses and damage to product quality image.
(.) “Sulfur Problem in the Operation of the Two 100-MW Power Barges in Mindanao”, Presented to the Faculty of the School Graduate Studies, LDCU, June 1997.
This paper studied the magnitude of the sulfur problem in the operation of two power barges stationed in Mindanao. The study covered the SOP’s of the barges, the profile and averages levels of sulfur in the fuel, the rate of sulfur dioxide emission, and the accumulated generation of the dioxide gas. The results show a need to address the problem more effectively aside from controlling the sulfur contents of bunker oil used.
(.) “The Cagayan de Oro City Landfill: Site Hydrogeology, Waste and Leachate Characteristics”, Presented to the Faculty of the School of Graduate Studies, LDCU, Oct 1997.
This paper assessed the conditions prevailing at the Cagayan de Oro City Landfill especially in relation to the hydrogeology, waste characteristics and leachate characteristics. The wastes are chiefly nonhazardous type but the hydrogeology reveals high potential for contaminating the groundwater. Preliminary findings show some soil and groundwater contamination but this needs confirmation. Leachate samples collected exceeded all important parameters of the government standards for effluents.
